Bulk and tap density

The bulk density of a material is the ratio of the mass to the volume (including the interparticulate void volume) of an unsettled powder sample. It is dependent on the density and arrangement of the powder particles and is influenced by the preparation, treatment and storage of the sample material.

In comparison, the tapped density is obtained by mechanically tapping a graduated cylinder containing the sample until little further volume change is observed.

The tapped density is calculated as mass divided by the final volume of the powder.

Comparing bulk density and tapped density can provide information on the ability of a powder to flow.
