Geriatric studies (with NHP models)

Geriatric NHP studies provide a representation of the human aging process to investigate age-related human health issues. Rhesus macaques (old world monkeys) and common marmosets (new world monkeys) can replicate the human aging process and are the most frequently studied in aging research.

While some challenges to studying aging NHP populations include cost implications and the lack of access to maturing models, the benefits include mirroring of human anatomy, physiology, behavior and neurobiology (the last of which is instrumental in Alzheimer’s disease research).

Neural circuits of NHPs have also been studied, for example, in Parkinson’s disease and Huntington’s disease research. Other contributions include HIV/AIDS, Zika, Ebola and other vaccination development.
