OECD 222: Earthworm reproduction test (eisenia fetida/eisenia andrei)

The OECD 222: Earthworm Reproduction Test assesses the effect of a substance on reproductive capacity, as well as mortality and body weight, of adult earthworms (Eisenia fetida or E. andrei). Adult worms are exposed to a standardized artificial soil which has been treated by spraying or mixing, depending on the usual application method for the substance. At 4 weeks the adults are removed, and mortality and body weight are assessed. After a further 4 weeks in the treated soil, surviving juveniles are counted. Reduction is reproductive capacity is reported as ECx or NOEC, and mortality as LCx or LOEC/NOEC.
