OECD 316: Phototransformation of chemicals in water (direct photolysis)

The OECD 316: Phototransformation of Chemicals in Water – Direct Photolysis Study measures the impact of direct sunlight on chemicals in surface water. After a theoretical assessment of possible transformations based on first-order kinetics, the necessity of an experiment is determined. If an experiment is necessary, the study is performed using a xenon arc lamp to simulate natural sunlight. Through this, the photolysis rate is determined, along with transformation pathways. Results can be adjusted for products intended for use in multiple climates, water bodies and seasons.
